but you know, we use the wrong metaphor. people say we're going to cut out the fat as if the fat was layered on the side. yeah, that's fat, but it's marbled. there's inefficiency in any human activity and it's hard to get rid of it. but you also -- you have a mix. you have some people who don't like government. what's most frustrating to me today is here's a problem. i heard somebody saying it the other day that the democrats are correctly seen as the party of government in that unlike our republican colleagues, we do believe that the private sector is the engine of wealth creation but also that there are some things that are important for the quality of our lives that we can only do if we pool our resources and make some rules and that's what the government is for. you can be the richest person in the world but you can't put out a fire, can't pave a highway, can't fix a bridge all by yourself. you need to come together with your fellow citizens to do it. what happens, though, when there are things going wrong, and this is t
